Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)

If your visa decision letter says you need to collect your BRP from a Post Office within 10 days of arriving in the UK, this guide tells you exactly what to do.

What is a BRP and why do I need to collect it?

A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a card that confirms your immigration status, right to work, and entitlements in the UK. It contains your photo, fingerprints, and visa conditions. Many visa holders are required to collect their BRP from a Post Office within 10 days of arriving in the UK — failing to do so can cause problems with your visa.

Who needs this?

Non-EEA nationals whose visa vignette (sticker) says "collect BRP from Post Office". Note: if you entered the UK after October 2024, you may have an eVisa instead — check your decision letter carefully.

What you'll need before you start

Have these ready before you begin.

  • Your passport (the one you used to enter the UK)
  • Your visa decision letter (which specifies the Post Office location)
  • Your Home Office reference number (from your decision letter)

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

    Read your decision letter carefully

Your decision letter will say which Post Office you must collect your BRP from — usually the one nearest to your UK address. It will also state the deadline (usually 10 days from arrival).

  2. 2

Check the Post Office location and opening hours

Visit the Post Office website to confirm your assigned branch's address and opening hours. Not all Post Offices offer BRP collection — only the specific one listed in your letter.

  3. 3

Travel to the Post Office with your documents

Bring your passport and decision letter. The staff will verify your identity and retrieve your BRP card. The process usually takes 5–10 minutes at the counter.

  4. 4

    Check your BRP card carefully

Before leaving the Post Office, check all details on the card: your name, date of birth, visa type, and expiry date. If anything is incorrect, report it immediately — do not leave the Post Office until you are satisfied.

  5. 5

    Store your BRP safely

Your BRP is an important document. Store it in a safe place — separate from your passport if possible. You will need it for employment, renting, and many other purposes throughout your stay.

  6. 6

Register with a GP and open a bank account

Now that you have your BRP, you can use it as proof of identity for registering with a GP and opening a UK bank account.
